Classes & Workshops

The Umdabu Dance Company will be teaching South African dance classes.

Starting Monday September 1, 2007
The Carver Theater for the Performing Arts.

Come join Umdabu’s fun and exciting South African dance classes.  Get a great work out while jamming to the rhythms of South Africa songs and drums.  Umdabu is offering adult classes for men and women and children classes for boys and girls.  The men and boys will learn warrior dances taught by real Zulus from South Africa.  Likewise the female and girls classes with be taught by Zulus and female dancers from the Umdabu Dance Company.

Adult female classes be every Monday at 6:00pm
Adult male classes will be every Monday at 7:10pm
Young adult female classes (TBA)
Young adult male classes (TBA)

Girls classes will be held on Saturdays from 1:00pm to 1:45pm
Boys classes will be held on Saturdays from 2:00pm to 2:45pm
Ages for these classes are 5 to 10 year olds.
Check back for added classes.

Adult classes----------- $45 per month
Children classes-------$35 per month
2 children---------------$55 per month  (per family)
3 or more----------------$70 per month  (per family)
*If a parent and children are taking  the classes, please call 251-7158 and speak with Asha.  We will work with you so all can take the classes.

OUR MISSION
The Umdabu Dance Company is a Birmingham, Alabama based dance theater dedicated to the preservation and presentation of traditional and Contemporary South African history and cultural; particularly that of the Zulu people.

ZULU CULTURAL TIPS

:: Traditional Clothing of the Zulus are cow, goat, and goat skins. Leopard skin was worn only by the Zulu Royal Family.
:: Cow skin is used on South African drums. Goat skin is used on sangoma (South Africa doctor) drums only.
:: There are 11 different tribes in South Africa. The Zulu tribe is the largest.
:: Before South Africa was invaded by the Dutch, it was known as Azania.
